The UCSC men’s and
women’s swim teams swam their first home meet of the season
this past Saturday. Their meet with Division 1 University of
Denver marked the first time these two teams met in the
schools’ history. The women fell with a final score of
112-185, and the men were defeated 109-171.
Senior Erin Hunter earned an NCAA automatic qualifying time
in the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.82. That time currently
ranks her first in all of Division 3 swimming. Erin’s time
of 2:11.65 was enough to place her first in the 200
butterfly as well. Other event winners for the Slugs were
Stephanie Luu in the 100 backstroke (1:02.25), Kate O’niell
in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.44), and Andra Steinbergs in
the 50 freestyle (25.25).
On the men’s side, the 400 free relay team of Kenton Drake,
Jamie Johnson, Troy Marcikic, and Ben Ferguson achieved a
winning time of 3:14.35. Sophomore Ben Ferguson won the 100
freestyle coming in at 47.36. Senior sprinter Troy Marcikic
finished off the sweep of the sprint freestyle events by
winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.27.
Sophomore breaststroker Nolan Rogers stated that: “We had
some really fast swims, and it was a good warm up for next
weekend.” The slugs will head down to Long Beach on
Wednesday to swim at Nike Cup.
